There have been aftermarket air conditioners designed to work in Mercedes cars. The first that I encountered was the Koolmeister that was installed in the early '60s W111s. Many were installed at dealers prior to or shortly after the car was delivered. More recently Diavia made a unit that was used in many 124s (and 201s I think) especially in the UK. I have had NO experience with these but have discussed them with owners (they were considered to be inferior to the factory units).
