My 1990 350 SDL w/240K miles just started not wanting to start when *really* hot. (95 degrees outside, A/C running for about an hour or so. Water Temp was a shade over the 100 degree mark, baking in the hot sun, traffic, etc, etc). Engine just cranks. After about 5 or 6 attempts, it starts to catch, but still won't start. Let the car cool down overnight and with a tap of the key, it comes to life and runs fine. If I just run it for a short 20 - 30 minute trip (but getting the temp to 100 yet, with the A/C on) it starts OK. Recently changed the IP shutoff diaphragm and fuel filters. (Car had a run-on problem <vbg>, followed by extreme loss of power caused by incorrect installation of said IP shutoff diaphragm), now fixed. Live and learn. Also, when running the A/C it started to smell in the car like burning leaves. Could it really be? Where might they be trapped? Today, the heat spell broke, ran the A/C....no smell. I don't think the problems are related. Anyone see these things before? Clues to where to look? Angelo, The burning smell may be a slipping belt on the AC compressor. I know it is monitored for rpm but I would look for a weak tensioner, and or a worn belt and pulleys. There is a master relay that is suspect also. good luck, Jim Friesen Phoenix AZ 79 300SD, 261 K miles 98 ML 320, 136 K miles
