Yes the glow plugs can stay on sometimes the light stays on and sometimes it doesn't. To check that all you need to do is run a wire to a glowplug and connect the wire to a 12 volt lamp that has a ground. You can tape it to a wiper arm. Another thing you need to check is alt belt tension. I once had a Buick and was plagued by a dead battery when my wife drove the car. I replaced the battery and alternator but no help. What was happening was short trips and the alt belt was slick and wasn't tight enough to charge the battery with the AC on. If this fails another gimmick to try is go to Radio Shack and get a 1/16 amp fuse 0.063 amp and put it in series with your battery overnight and if it's blown in the morning you know something is happening. If it blows, next night do the same thing and pull half the fuses out of the fuse box. That way you can isolate it to one half the circuits and then do ait again.
Good luck and happy hunting

Subject: [MBZ] Battery drain brain teaser

I am stumped. My 300 SD has been giving me fits over the past several
months: a dead battery over night out of the blue.
First I had the battery checked - good battery, 3 years off the 5 year warranty.
Next I replaced the alternator, it needed it.
And still, every so often, once a week or two, the battery is dead in
the morning.
I put an Amp meter between the + post and the cable. Less than 1 mA
draw with the key off.
Alternator shows good charge after starting, 40+ A for a few minutes,
tapering off to near zero.
My question is this: is it possible that randomly, every so often, the
glow relay stays energized after start and key is returned to position
2 ? This would draw more than the alternator output for as long as the
car is driven. I really don't know how I could monitor this
continuously.
TIA
