Few people have the time or inclination to part out a car, let alone deal
with the flotsam and jetsam you encounter on eBay to sell the stuff.

Even yards get fed up. Right now I can have a rusty '85 300sd with a perfect
motor and transmission, nice brown leather, most of the electrics work, for
less than they would ask for just the engine + turbo, if I called them on
the phone asking for it.
