Thanks Don,

I was thinking about that, & If it was the exhaust valves then it would be 
backfiring through the muffler.

I noticed this happens when I set the timing to 4 ATDC. If I back it off a 
little it I don't see it.

What's the chance that the timing marks are off?

Any way to compensate for that?

I had the head resurfaced and the shop replaced the valves (so they say) to 
acomadate unleaded fuel.

I'll pickup a compression tester and check it out.
