Forgot to tell you that I mixed it 50/50 with engine oil....

STP was the standard for detroit iron (read loose fit) With the closer and more accurate fit of modern aluminum engines (Read tight fit) And given the "stickiness" of Mobil 1, I would opt for the mobil 1, or perhaps some Molykote product. The Molykote product I am thinking of is a Molybenum Disulfide suspension in oil. The Moly is a friction reducing agent. I can't remember what they call the product. It is available at bearing supply houses. (Motion Industries, etc)

STP is so thick that i'd be afraid of causing some damage from assembly or start-up (Distorted bearing caps, etc.) on your engine. Yes, I always used to use STP for assembly. For a cast iron OM engine, it is ok, but I still have some concerns. I'm just not sure it is the best thing for alum heads etc. Even the fit of pistons and crank bearings are tighter on MB engines than the old detroit iron. I have seen some odd distortion of main and crank bearings on high mile cast iron diesel engines that may have been caused by something like this. It is irregular cavities in the bearing surface, on the order of 1/8 to 1/4 inch wide and 1/2-3/4 inch long. I have never figured out the cause. THey are not etching from acid. I have seen those too.

I'm replacing the head gasket on my 94 S350. I see ads for Camshaft
Prelube. Is the stuff necessary, or can I just bath everything in
Mobil-1 before I button it up?

Thanks
