Douglas, There are two bushing, I believe. From your description, the bushing in the console is shot. There is a bushing for the shifter that is in the console You need to remove the gear shift lever cover (with the windows switches), but not the entire console. To do this: 1. Remove the ashtray with the frame and disconnect the plugs. 2. Take the carpet liner out on the console tray 3. Remove the screws from the front of the cover. (Some covers only slide in place) 4. Pick up on the front of the cover so you can push the hazard switch upward from below and remove. 5. Pull the cover toward the rear, and out of the console.
The shifter housing ( the cover with the position indicators P-R-N-D etc) has four screws, remove the screws. The Shifter has a lock nut. Loosen the lock nut and unscrew the shifter. You should now be able to see the shifter bushing. The shifter attached to the transmission with a clip. Remove the clip from under the car. There is a bushing (more like a washer insert) where the shifter attaches to the transmission. Once it is loose from the transmission, lift the shifter from the inside of the car. I think this will get you started. Good luck. It is real loose and sometimes doesn't lock the tranny in park. Only starts in neutral alot of the time. I have read some about bushings or such there. I looked and there are three different ones. I know that they don't cost much and think I will buy them all. Can someone tell me what I am going to be going through to do this. I plan on using a lift for the job so I am not going to be laying down. Concerned about if I have to remove the console and lower the transmission? tia..
