Bill, 25 mpg is good mileage for a 126.120 300SD. It is VERY rare fore
an owner to get even high 20 mpg or 30 mpg - not something that even
careful drivers can achieve reliably.

As to a PROPER engine or transmission rebuild - they will be EXPENSIVE.

You will NOT be well served by an engine that has been rebuilt
inexpensively!

I'd seriously start looking for a sound used engine. A low mileage one
from a recently wrecked car is a good bet.

I cannot believe an inch of play in any direction on the crankshaft.
(I can hardly believe that much play in a loose balancer/pulley
assembly, although it is possible if the retaining bolt fell out)

At any rate, if your pulleys came loose, you may be able to drill/pin
the crank/pulley interface and restore the fit. Otherwise, you're looking
for an engine. I know of a 1984 300SD, lightly wrecked front&rear, that
the seller is asking $500 for in western Michigan. Where is your car?

Thanks to both of you for responding. The car is in Melbourne, Florida and
I live in Jacksonville, FL. I understand expensive, but a rough suggestion
would help. I really have no idea. The last one I had done was in 1966 [a
1962 220S - which later died saving my life] and it cost $600. I suspect
that Florida has a few wrecked MB's around, so shipping one in from Michigan
might not be needed, but which engines will fit? Should I look for another
300SD in the '81 - '84 era, or will a later or other model [240D or 300D]
work in my car?
Side note - I like both guns and MB diesels, so all posts are interesting,
though the threads are bit hard to follow at times.
