At the time, I drove a Vega and then a 1978 Pinto. Hey, I was a junior enlisted guy so give me a break.
We were required by NATOPS (as if you don't know what that means) to drain all of the tanks of their 145 Octane AvGas when we did an annual inspection. Well, we could drain the tanks into a waste vehicle ... OR we could drain the tanks into our personal vehicles. Since I was the supervisor ... well, good AvGas is such a terrible thing to waste. Ya ain't heard a Pinto scream until you've heard it fueled by 145 AvGas. This, by the way, is how my Benz mech friend kept his car topped off with JP5.
