When I started to feed the new chain into the engine on my '83 300D, it
went about a quarter turn on the steering pump pulley and stopped with a
clunk; metal on metal. I pulled on the chains to be sure there was no
slack, moved the camshaft pulley to be sure valves were not hitting the
pistons, and checked for any visible obstructions.
I then turned the pulley backwards while also turning the camshaft back. It
went back a quarter turn on the steering pump pulley and stopped with a
clunk; metal on metal.
The spring and chain tensioner have been removed, and I can't see any
obstruction when looking down in the engine. The ends of the chains have
nylon cords attached which go through pulleys in the ceiling and have heavy
weights hanging on them to keep the chain ends tight.
When turning the crank between the two "stops", both chain ends move
normally; one up and one down.
Has anyone had this happen when installing a new chain? Any ideas what it
might be?
Thanks,
Gerry
