Hmm, a Ford Falcon I6 circa late '60s would get about 20mpg. A mini SUV, Ford
Escape is rated for 21 w/a 4cyl 2.3 (!) liter...

Minivans give more mileage per volume transported. Meaning you can move more
stuff because of a larger interior for the gas used. They're cheaper to
maintain and cheaper to purchase. They use cheaper tires and a slightly cheaper
to insure. Those are all gross generalizations and I'd love to see some hard
data to back it up. I wouldn't love it enough to drive a minivan though. I've
often said if we have a family it'll be a station wagon for us. Probably either
a W123 or a Focus, isn't that a spread?

An Explorer with a V6 is still smaller than the station wagon that your father
drove. I really don't know why SUV's
are picked on so much. A mini-van is not much different but no one seems to
mind them.

Wait, she "has to have an SUV" for 3 car seats? Holy crap, all those
families with 3 kids and a stationwagon when I
was growing up "had to have" an SUV?

Theres "have to have" and "its easier to have"... Besides
why does she have 3 kids?
I always wonder about that on the news "Bill has 16 children he supports
on $2 a day" well gee Bill wouldn't it be
easier to support your kids if you'd only had 4, or maybe none?

You makes your choices and you pays your price.

If Clinton had opened ANWAR in 1992 we'd have burned all the oil (when it
was $10 a barrell) by now and oil prices
would be even higher since we wouldn't have it in reserve.

or

Nobody would have drilled when it was $10 a barrell and we'd be talking
about easing environmental restrictions so
they could go in and drill in a hurry now (okay a couple years ago but you get
the idea).

Oh BTW yeah prices are gonna go up. Poor people are gonna give up smoking and
budweiser and cable tv and NASCAR
crap they really don't need. We're a nation of whiny "need"
everythings that can't separate our "needs" from our
"wants". We've got it so easy now we have no idea how easy we
have it. I'll surely put myself into that "we".
