I've heard those sorts of stories too (although out in the hinterlands we use
paper ballots) but how could you explain electing Romney twice?

I got talking to this elderly lady poll worker in Melrose, Massachusetts
(I think one of two generally Republican towns in MA, our used-to-be
mayah, who was gay and took ovah from the old gay mayah who was
80-something, is now head of the Log Cabin Republicans -- we were
tolerant and accepting!) about the mechanical voting machines (huge old
green things about twice the size of a big refrigerator) one time when I
went to vote, maybe 20-25 yr ago.  She told me very quietly, looking
around warily, that they used to arrive with the votes already set for
the "winnah" in each particular community, except ours because they
weren't Democrats, but it was not so prevalent anymore (emphasis on "not
so").  She sorta laughed, but that was the way it was, and might still
be in some places.  Now of course we know about the leanings and general
elected officials in Massachusetts...but I digress.

Go figyah.
