No question about it for me - my late 80's Vanagon GL, named the Anti-Christ
after but a few trips in it [and having seen "The Gods Must Be Crazy".] I
bought it from an engineer, and he sure smiled a lot when he took my money.
Interior and exterior were pretty good, but the AC, engine and just about
every other mechanical piece on the car was subject to breaking or failing
at any time, and did so with a frequency that I have never seen before or
since on a car. I was never so happy about selling any other car, and the
guy who bought it from me wondered if I knew the actual Blue Book value
because I asked so little for it. I just smiled and took his money, though
it was no enough to cover the repair bills from my time with it. We went
from that to probably the all around best and most reliable car we ever
owned, a factory demonstrator of the first year Mazda 929. 265K miles with
few problems. My wife would buy another one in a minute.

Worst car my parents owned was probably a '77 Buick Opel (rebadged
izuzu). Would do about 60 wide open in 4th gear with the motor
screaming. Also very prone to rust despite (or maybe because of) the
aftermarket "rustproofing" they bought.

Personally I've had pretty good luck. Worst was probably our '02
Dodge Caravan, it had persistent electrical issues that the dealer was
unable to resolve for more than a few months at a time. I really
liked almost everything else about it though.
