Very similar to the M104 coils that sit right on top of the plugs in one of the worst environments for elctrical stuff you can imagine. Yes, the coils will fail from time to time, though it's more often the connectors that go bad.
Does the Frod have a short connector piece that goes between the plug and the coil like the Mercedes? That's one of the M104 trouble spots. Many people replace the plug wires and forget about this part.
