My 98 ML has the 5 speed with the empty dipstick tube. It also has the
drain plug on the torque converter, and I was able to drain almost 7 quarts
when
I changed to Mobil 1 ATF at about 123k. Now passing 157k with plans to
change it again in the Fall ( to darn hot right now!)

I went in to the dealer to have him review my ML' service history when I
bought it (122K). He advised that the average life of a 5 speed auto was 125k
and I should start saving for a replacement. A new one is over $5k with new
computer.

Some sealed five-speeds did have a torque converter drain; the 722.622
in my '98 S420 does. Changing the fluid is much easier than it was on
the .315 in my old 300D. More expensive, too, as you need fancy oil, a
fancy dipstick "tool" (priced accordingly), an infrared thermometer, and
a new tamperproof lock for the dipstick tube.

Mine is at 149k miles and works perfectly. I sure hope these things are
good for more than 150k miles.
