Others have tried & failed - eBay just has too much momentum. The day will come when eBay will stumble or the IRS will find a way to force them to issue 1099s, then the ride will get more interesting for eBay.

I think there were issues because they get a lot of advertising revenue from eBay. Setting up a site to compete with eBay would face the big problem of how do you get enough visitors to make the site worth bothering with for sellers.
