No idea how it might apply to this situation but I had an 86 Suburban that 
pinged unless I ran midgrade fuel -
until I changed out the valve seals. After a bit of running it was happy with 
the regular fuel and had more power
and made better mileage. Maybe the oil being burned contributed to the carbon 
buildup?

Do you get any blue smoke on first startup? That is what my truck did and what 
caused me to change the seals.

I also get pinging on my 91 volvo 240 even on slight uphill pulls. If I
agree that it should not ping, what specific steps do I take to find out and
then remedy the problem?
