The term "dead reckoning" comes from the sailors on wind
powered vessels.  It was spelled "ded" reckoning, an
abbreviation of "deductive" reckoning, meaning a position
calculated from compass, log (speed through the water), wind,
lead (water depth) and a good guess. It was in contrast to a
celestial fix, based on sun, moon, and star positions.
