I've seen copper used with good results. If it were to fail, it would split and leak, no huge deal.
PVC would likely burst and throw shrapnel. That would be most likely to happen if it is struck, bent or sees an unusual stress. That would not be good as there would most likely be folks there to be struck. Black Pipe is cheap. What's wrong with it?
