Alex,

It was a top-loader......   Haven't needed to spend any money on a  
front-loader....  Bought last top-loader from Craigslist for $100  
four years ago and it's still working.

This topic reminds me - back in the early 1940's we had a Bendix  
front-loader washer and hung the wash in the basement in winter and  
outside in summer.....  And before that it was a "top-loader" with a  
manual wringer attached.. Back then there was only powder, IIRC.....

At least the memory works at times, sorta!
