I've been self employed for 7.5 years and security or at least "perceived security" is definitely an issue.
The biggest battle was my Wife - she stated; "What about vacation - how will you replace your 3 weeks vacation?" It took several years to convince her that vacation is not a gift from the company. On the contrary, vacation is a cost to the company & it is factored into the cost of Employing you along with everything else they "give you", like insurance & their part of your SSI contributions. In other words, your Employer really is not giving you any of these benefits - they are just part of your "pay package". Once my wife understood this concept, she stopped complaining. We go on vacations when we want and our health insurance is covered by her Employer.
