Here's a data point. Number 3 child just got a raise at the car dealership where she works in CA. But with her increased income, she is no longer eligible for MediCal and the pay increase is not enough to cover premiums for the group medical plan where she works. IMHO, she NEEDS to continue medical coverage so I am subsidizing her until she gets another raise and is at least even with before. But the math in this case says to turn down the raise or seek some other compensation, like fewer hours. I'm really glad she had MediCal because she really needed it on several occasions. But this kind of setup creates some serious negative incentives for working and it's not good for the US.

They would rather sit in front of the tube with their bud-lite & chips than go out & get a second job or an education to better themselves. Now, I have no problem with the Earned Income Credit program in principal. Kaleb's family probably qualifies because of the number of children they now have, but Kaleb works! He has a day job & he peddles used Mercedes parts on the side! My issue is that, like the family members I mentioned in my example, the plan enables laziness & builds an entitlement culture! Both families I mentioned were fully capable of working extra hours & making much more than they netted with EIC but they chose not to. And now they have trained their children to do the same thing. In other words, the EIC program has fostered a second generation who would rather suck dollars out of the system than go to work. The issue is one of culture and I'm afraid we are building a even larger entitlement culture with many millions of hands reaching out to the Federal Government for money. This is the exact reason I am not voting for Obama. His entire career has been composed of programs designed to help the poor by "stealing from the rich". And I'm sure that to some percentage, his programs have been a great success, but at what cost to our society? Do we need more Government handouts? Do we need to tax the rich & give to the poor & create an even larger entitlement culture than we have now?
