My understanding -- from this "well seasoned and experienced" mechanic -- was that you DO NOT (in honor of Dr. Booth) USE ETHER on a small diesel engine. You use WD-40.
I had offered to run home and get my can of ether when he just about took my head off. When I offered to run home and get my can of WD-40, he said that would be nice, if I didn't mind. As an aside, he didn't even say "thanks" when I showed up with the WD-40. He got the bus started and went back to his shop without as much as an "up yours" to me. I think he knew I was management, based on my clothes, and the guy he was trying to help out (the bus driver that day) was more at his corporate level.
