This thing apparently is available for free right now, lets you run winders apps on macs in some fashion or other that is a total mystery to me

That's WINE. WINdows Emulation. Its core has been around
for a long time. It was the coolest, but also the most persnickety
of the winders paths. With it you don't run Windoze at all, you
just run winders apps and WINE translates their ABI calls. Not
everything runs, however.

Similar in concept to my CP/M simulation. In it you don't run
CP/M itself, you just run (selected) CP/M applications. See:

        http://userweb.windwireless.net/~jimc/com.html

The inverse concept is Cygwin. Runs Unix applications by mimicking
the Unix ABI under Windows. You never actually run Unix at all.
