radio) near the 4 conductor plug.. Is there any good trouble shooting procedures / recommendations? I did not see any thing around the excellent "Jim Cathey ACC check list". Is there a way to check out / work on the unit (antenna)?

Had I kept at the biz the antenna would no doubt have gotten the
same treatment. But it can be diagnosed: the plug to it should
have hot, ground, and a signal from the radio. Also a wire or
two associated with the dash switch. The car's schematic is
invaluable here. But the usual problem is inside the antenna.
Mechanical stickage, or fried electronics, or broken belt (86+).

The procedure for removing the mast has the antenna extended. Can it be taken apart with it retracted??

Yes, but you usually remove the whole thing from the car, open it up,
and peel it apart that way.
