I was told by a Texaco technical person that automatic transmission fluid is a 10 weight non detergent oil with an antifoam agent; and that it is identical to powersteering fluid and hydraulic jack fluid. That was about 20 years ago; specs may have changed since then. I have a case of Mercedes brake fluid dot 4, a case of Mobil ATF, and 2-3 cases of Mercedes ATF. I called a local Mercedes dealer, and a parts person stated that the Mercedes ATF was a synthetic. I purchased the 4-5 cases for $40, locally via Craig's list. I did not ask where or how he acquired it.
