The early ones (that even had power retractable 'corner sticks' so you'd know where the corners of the car were while backing up) have more failures because they have more gizmos than anything that ever came before them. After the owner(s) get tired of paying to fix them, they start to ignore all the little things, until so many little things have failed that nobody would want to pay to have them all fixed. Not really the car's fault, except for stuff like A/C evaporators, diesel connecting rods and certain gas engine management electronics.
