I didn't understand why they wanted us to stay on a plane in danger of catching fire, but that was the procedure in NATOPS (Naval Aviation Tactical Operating Standards).
I assume so that you aren't in the way of any firefighting that might have to break out. I bet that if there's nobody out there waiting with a hose that it _was_ policy to get off the plane!
