I too have noticed over the years that 123 240D's feel MUCH slower than 115 versions. Talking about autos, not sticks. Same probably applies though.

Gentlemen,

An auto 240D is not necessarily slow. Our 75 (W115)
isn't head-snapping fast, but is easily quick enough
to maneuver and stay ahead of traffic. It has a great
crisp motor and tranny. It seems to be geared low,
not sure, but it definitely feels nimble and
responsive.

On the other hand, the 77 240D (W123, manual) was
abysmally slow when I got it last year. It is
steadily improving with M1 and hard driving but has a
long way to go to catch up with the W115. I think it
is heavier than the W123, at least it feels that way. I drove another W123 240D the other day and it was a
slug, although the owner crowed about its strong
motor. But I know of at least one 240D that isn't
slow.
