I'm looking at an eBay '87 300D that the owner says the following
about when questioned about the condition of the car:

"The injection pump may be an issue in the future, it is adjusted
correctly so the engine idles smooth and has all the correct power,
but the setting is out of spec to get a correctly running engine."

Does that sounds scary, or not an issue for a 603.960 engine?

I would NOT suggest buying a car that has had the injection pump "adjusted." Maybe the ALDA tweaked, but NOTHING else. The pumps should last about as long as the engine, should NOT need "adjustment" and there are VERY few shops capable of adjusting the pump properly (when properly adjusted it runs fine at idle AND on the highway ;-)!
