I honestly don't see why anyone would care if people are cruising in the
shoulder...they are the ones risking the ticket...opening the shoulder in
high traffic reduces traffic by 40%....i saw it in the history channel on
the show "modern marvels"....the german highway patrol allows it on the
autoban.
Because:
1) you swerve to avoid an accident into a supposed-to be empty e-lane
and some idiot doing 70 creams you
2) you merge into an exit lane and ditto
3) the idiot reaches a bridge and tries to cut back in from someplace
he should never have been
4) the idiot sees a cop giving tickets for cruising the e-lane and
would rather push you into the next lane over than get caught
5) some poor bastard is actually using the e-lane for what it's for
and is changing a tire when some idiot slams into him
6) someone cruising in the e-lane hits a chunk of debris that are
quite common in metro e-lanes and looses control, causing an accident
I could go on, but won't. I grew up in metropolitan MA where people
did this all the time. I saw several accidents as a result. I even
saw people passing people in the e-lane by going onto the grass
beside the e-lane to get around them, loose control, and fishtail
into two lanes of traffic. I have NO tolerance for such behavior.
It's on par with the other MA driving sport--going straight through
an intersection in a turn-only lane.
