My point to the original poster was that I didn't think the M103 had knock
sensors so don't rely on a component that isn't there to save your bacon.

My car did get 87, once.  It was the only option at one point after
hurricane this or that ~ 2 years ago.  I know my motor started at ~ 9.2:1
and has probably had the head shaved so is a bit higher than that.  That
coupled with no knock sensor and a dislike for even 89 octane has taught me
all I need to know.

SHould take a look at your site but I've also seen pistons pockmarked from
preignition- thankfully, not in my car.
