The Dodge Omni, a small hatchback back in the '80s, was not a bad car
for a small econobox. A friend of mine had one and it actually was
quite a peppy car. I don't recall if they actually made it or if it was
badge engineering though. I think they used VW motors.

The L body borrowed heavily from the Rabbit, but it was a Chrysler product.
Originally powered by the 1.7L VW, the 2.2L K-car motor became an option in 1982. Eventually the VW motor was replaced by a 1.6L Peugot as the base engine, there were 2.2L turbo versions culminating in the Dodge/Shelby GLH-S, and I believe the 2.2 NA became standard in 1987. From 1988-1990, the Shelby was dead, and all cars had a TBI 2.2NA those last 2 1/2 years. I put 232,000 miles on a 1989 Horizon, the only new car I ever bought. At the time, it was one of the last remaining cars that could be bought with manual steering.
