Lo, these many years ago, my friend, just Retired USAF Major CM, being "out" thought he might be qualified for some kind of flying job. After all, he wore a 1000hr B-47 pin and had flown C-141s all over the world including several years of continuous round trips to Viet Nam during the unpleasantness. At that time Japan Airlines had decided they needed some non-Japanese pilots and put the word out. So, my friend filled out the forms and showed up at Grant County Airport in Moses Lake WA where JAL's training center had been located for decades. One early morning, about 2AM according to the story, as part of the routine, he took a checkride in a JAL DC-8 (never piloted one before but it's just another airplane, right?). So, they are flying along in the pitch black night of eastern Washington at an assigned (by the IP) altitude and he was directed to turn left 90deg and descend to some other assigned altitude. And the requirement was that he roll out exactly on the assigned heading AND on the assigned altitude, simultaneously. Hand flying, BTW. No plus or minus here, RIGHT ON. Well, it didn't work out quite that way. Didn't get the job. RLE ************** Nothing says I love you like flowers! Find a florist near you now.
