I was thinking specifically about the cost. Everything else (other than
insurance rates) is purely ego-related. Might justify and be an occasion for
a tattoo. I normally think of an ATP ticket as work related, not something
to prove to yourself what a good pilot you are.

Maybe he has more discretionary income than he knows what to do with. If so,
then go for it.
