I had a similar experience and some how it linked to Ebay. My account at
Ebay was broken into by a bad guy and Ebay caught it real fast. They shut
my account down. I was using Gmail for my Ebay address.
At the same time, my Gmail got cleaned out and I was not aware of anything.
Without my Gmail, Ebay had no way to alert me and I was not active at Ebay
at the time.
I gave up on Gmail and one day decided to go to Ebay. Of course I could not
log in. I opened a new account so I could ask questions. Took 482 long
years to get my Ebay cleared up.
I got a new Gmail for Ebay but it has never been the same and I no longer
trust them.

At least MS (e.g, Hotmail) works.
