You didn't say but I'll guess this is a manual trans in which case I'm 
reasonably sure the switch is in the car under the shifter boot. On my 190D 
anyway theres an arm on the shifter which pushes on the switch... Now that I 
think of it I haven't looked at the 240D so take this for what its worth.

Hi Gang -
Have a 78 240D W123 and the Backup lights stopped working - the bulbs and 
fuse are good.  Where is the switch?  I assume the gearshift mechanism 
operates it?   Once I get under the car it'll probably become clear, but if 
someone can offer some guidance before I start looking around up there I'd 
appreciate it.
