Ah, good input. I should have posted the question a day or so before I started the procedure. (87 190D NA approx 290k mi.)
I actually did not have to loosen or remove the two-bolted bracket I was referring to. The bracket I meant is the actual assembly that holds the whole filter deal. But as I said, it turns out I did not have to move it. As for the stiff vacuum line, I just pulled it forward to pop it out of its grommeted bracket. I did have to remove the radiator hose - radiator side - to get filter out. It slid out pretty easily, with minor spillage. And shoot! I forgot that filter changing time is the time to administer diesel purge! I have some from Rusty sitting in the garage. I cranked for just a few seconds and it came to life, but died. And then I thought I screwed up by letting off the starter before it was fully running and, per the manual, it might not start after that. Or maybe that's the 240D manual. But I jumped with the battery from the 240 just because I don't like running my battery down much. After a few more cranking sessions of maybe 7 - 10 seconds each and remembering I need to use the pedal to goose it along, it started. Brian On Mon, Apr 13, 2009 at 5:55 AM, Dwight E.
