Layoffs are what you make of them. I've been through 2 and in both cases came out the other side better off than if I'd stayed.
My father in-law is due to be laidoff in October, he was notified last October. If he stays until his last day he gets something like 56 weeks of severance, if he doesn't he gets something like 36 weeks... In either case he gets 1 YEAR of support through a job bank, resume classes, something like 20 credit hours at a local community college and some other things I forget. He's so upset about the whole thing he keeps saying he's gonna quit and they can keep the severance. I've taken to replying with "Yeah well, you could do that but it'd be retarded". I'm sick to death of his "poor me" attitude about the whole thing, the company is bending over backward for him and he's decided "they don't care about me" merely because he's not needed. He's also trying to say he'll "retire" and get social security but he's only 55 so he's not gonna get squat. This is the same guy who brags about how he's gotten 3% in his 401K for the last 15 years because its in a bond fund. I love pointing out he's gotten 0% in his 401K for the last 15 years (compared to inflation) because he's in a bond fund where I've made more money in the last 5 years than he's got in his whole 401K because I took the time to go to college (which he was pushed to do by his employer(who would have paid) but refused (!) and by using an aggressive growth fund. Sometimes it sucks being laid off, or so some people tell me......
