original is a nylon or fiberglass braid and the hose is _way_
softer. I could not get the fitting onto the hose, so I came home.

Have the hydraulic shop do the work.  Your old hose is soft,
in part because it's dying.  It might have been softer than
the other hose in the beginning, but I bet it's not supposed
to be as soft as it is now.

Then I noticed there is something inside the hose. Attached is a
photo.  Anyone know what it is, or why it's there?

I suspect that this is may be the 'special' feature that
prevents pump noise?  Put it in the new hose and see
how it works for you.  Report back to us.
