My bad, in is cutting of groves in something like a metal handle.

As I recall from years gone by, the 3.0L V6 by Mitsu that was used in the
caravan had brass/bronze valve guides and aluminum heads. The valve guides
would come loose from head and start getting oil in cylinders and smoke like
freight trains. The solution was to press out guides, knurl them and press
back in. At least that was what I was told by the machine shop...
