"The energy carried by methanol is less than was needed to make it"

This is the problem with almost all of these so-called "alternative" fuels, 
they are not energy sources but are only a storage medium for energy generated 
elsewhere, with the attendant losses dictated by the laws of thermodynamics.  
Though, they do say that the energy losses making methanol are less than 
electrolyzing water to make hydrogen.

Methanol is also quite toxic, this issue was not mentioned at all that I saw.
