One reason the Pacer was so ugly was its weird proportions, which I think
were actually well-intentioned---the designers tried to make a small car
that still seemed roomy inside by making it very wide for its length.
(Wider than a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, according to Wikipedia!) Quite
different from the prevailing style in which subcompacts are tall and
narrow. I think the short, wide design is arguably better suited to
American roads, while a narrow car works better on European and Japanese
roads.

But there's no way to make a short, wide car attractive. I was at an orphan
car meet this past weekend that featured a few AMCs, including a Gremlin and
a Maverick, but no Pacers. I wanted to take a picture from directly behind,
from which angle, because of the bulging side glass and inboard C-pillars,
the Pacer looks like a fat guy wearing suspenders.
