I have heard opinions both ways on that, some say add them, others say adding them will shorten compressor life because they get plugged up

due to all this talk, i spent some time researching it today. seems the
apco is a very nice unit. i even shipped one today to someone.

the deal is that all r4s are trouble, but mostly because users. they blow up and leave crap in the system. if the crap is not totally flushed out, some of the remaining crap has a bad tendency to get into the new compressor
and destroy it.

There's no such thing as 'totally flushed out'. Needs a filter added to the system if you expect to get several years out of the new compressor.
