In fact, I have never even seen an inner fail myself. This dealing with FWD gm cars. In the case where the boot splits and the outer joint fails, its easier and better to just replace the whole axle.

That's what an outer front CV joint sounds like. Klatta, klatta, klatta.
Inners are more likely to show up as vibration instead of noise, and have little to do with steering wheel position. 90% of the time the outers fail first.
