Had a similar problem with '83 240D. Couldn't find the slow leak. Tightened
"all" the hose clamps a half turn or less. Hasn't leaked since. Never did
find the leak. This Zerex antifreeze doesn't have as much dye as Prestone,
which might be why it's harder to spot a leak. I use a Craftsman flexible
screwdriver on hose clamps so I won't get them too tight. The flexible
shaft on the screwdriver "winds up" when it's usually tight enough.

Yea, I think the fans is what caused it to run hot and maybe puke some
of the fluid quicker than usual, but its still been loosing coolant for
a while. It will get down to where it turns on the light probably every
2 weeks, maybe 3. I filled it up yesterday to the fill line and wife
drove car to Tulsa and back last night, and just checked it today and
its down maybe 1/2 inch from the fill line. Guess it does not really
have to mean it used that much in that short of time, just that it
settled at that point. The level seems like it could change based on
temp. Might have been warmer yesterday when i filled it or something,
and today was totally cooled off so it ended up lower.

If the aux fans were not coming on, it probably was running hot. Since
you fixed that problem, why not just drive it for a week and see how it
does. Don't condemn anything until you have more evidence. The slight
coolant leak (that is evidently not noticeable when it is leaking, sounds
like a radiator to me). Does this engine have a bleeder screw to help
"burb" out the air in the system? If it does open the screw let it idle
and see if you can get the air out of the system.
