Can you turn it somehow for a compression test on each cyl?

it has already been removed from the car, or if it is still in the car but
unconnected to whatever it would take to test it by firing it up. Are

any testing criteria one could apply, assuming it's sitting on a shelf in
the junkyard? Does it rely solely on the integrity of the junk yard
owner?
