Finally got the parts tonight. Chain, Link, tensioner, 4 rails, 2 valve cover gaskets. Don't know yet what else i will need but didn't order.

Started removing stuff. It would have been a good time to replace belts, as the WP belts have to be removed to get the PS pump loose to remove the PS mounting plate to be able to get to the chain guide pins. Alt belt has to come off too.

Removed air cleaner
removed fan and shroud. Really like the old 4 bolt fan as opposed to the newer one bolt taper fit (and bung the radiator and your hands) method. Dumped some antifreeze on the floor while pulling upper radiator hose. Good time for replacing the upper hose too, if your car needs one. Also a good time to change antifreeze.
Removed Cruise control servo
Removed Rt valve cover
Removed Alt Mounting , moved to the side
Removed PS pump
Removed PS pump bracket
determined my 1 1/8 deep socket will fit on the crank, but don't have the right extensions. Fortunately, I am doing this job 3 blocks from HF, so it will be easy to get extensions in the am Determined the Distributor has to be removed to get the upper rail on the Left head (BUMMER)
Quit for the night

Will determine TDC #1 in the morning; mark everything related to IGN. so it can be put back. (includes match marks on the dist and Dist mounting.) Will probably invest in a steering wheel puller at HF also. The chain rail pins are on recessed surfaces. The front of the heads is not FLAT, like the front of cast iron Diesel blocks. I think the wheel puller bar will span the flats, so that there is enough pull to get started. Not enough flat surface around the pins to use a stack of washers or a socket to pull them with a bolt.

Not as easy as I had hoped, however the tensioner is accessible unlike a cast iron Diesel with a yorkie compressor bracket. (or even without)

A guy up the road loaned me a tool he invented and made that mounts on the right head and holds the chain tight while you break it and roll in the new chain. Really slick. Will take pictures and post later. He said Snappy sells the tool now. Probably $469. Yeouch!

He said the job takes lots of vicegrips and lots of time without the tool. I Sure am glad I bumped into his wisdom before I embarked on this adventure. It is not as easy as an inline MB engine. (old Diesels preferred)

I have not determined if any of the guides have broken off and fallen in. The chain DOES show wear on the outside of the links, indicating it is rubbing somewhere. a sure sign of worn chain and maybe worn out rails.
