The most important feature of the airbox is separating the clean side (center of filter) from the dirty side. The lid is necessary to this. If you run a 6mm stud through the side of the housing and put a nut on it, you won't be creating much of a leak (and the rubber bumper on the outside might seal it perfectly) and any leak will be on the dirty side anyway.
