Hi all,

A month ago I posted about some odd shifting on my 1987 300D, mostly a
part-throttle flare that was intermittent. Fiddling with the vacuum
modulator on the transmission helped but didn't entirely fix things,
and I wasn't sure if it was good to go too 'firm' when the WOT shifts
were already fine.

Anyway, major kudos to Joe Knight for what seems to have 99% fixed the
problem. The vacuum control valve (VCV) on the injection pump has an
adjustment range, which I had moved toward 'firm' in an attempt to
cure the problem. Turns out, that VCV is unhappy when not adjusted per
the factory procedure. After fixing that, I actually softened the
tranny modulator a bit and I think it's about back to normal now. For
those wondering, the procedure is to loosen the 2 bolts, have a friend
floor the pedal, turn the VCV gently clockwise until resistance is
felt, and tighten things up. The end.

Anyone with a 602/603 engine might want to check this out... the
adjustment on two cars (plus Joe's) ended up being right in the middle
of the range (as seen by the slotted mounting holes). Thanks again for
the tip, Joe!

That's a good one - thanks Dave and Joe!
